How to Use Text to Speech and Save It as a File

How to listen to text with your browser's read-aloud feature, why saving is tricky, and what you can do instead.

Use this when you'd rather listen to a long text than read it.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text into Text to Speech.
  2. Choose a voice, speed and pitch. Only the voices installed on your device are listed.
  3. Press Read aloud. You can pause and resume too.

If the voice you need is missing

If your operating system doesn't have a voice installed for a language, no voice for that language will appear. On Windows you can add voices in the Language or Speech section of Settings (menu names differ by version).

If you want to save it as a file

Browser speech synthesis is designed to play through your speakers, so it does not provide a way to save the audio as a file. Here are the alternatives.

Recording and distributing copyrighted text read aloud can cause problems. Keep it for personal study.
