Audio Converter (MP3 · WAV)
Add a file, pick the format and quality, then save. The conversion happens on this device. Formats your browser can't open can't be converted.
- Only upload files you have the right to use. Copying or sharing other people's music, videos or recordings without permission can violate copyright law. FreeSoundTools does not store your files on a server.

Phones, recorders and video editors all use different audio formats, so files often don't play nicely together. An audio converter is the most basic fix for those format mismatches.
When to use it
- Turn an iPhone or Android recording (m4a) into a universal MP3
- Extract the sound from a video file (mp4) and save it as MP3 or WAV
- Convert to lossless WAV to bring it into an editing program
- Lower the sample rate or bitrate to make the file smaller
- Turn a stereo recording into mono to cut the file size
How to use
- Add an audio or video file. mp3 · wav · m4a · ogg · flac · aac · mp4 · webm and more are supported.
- Pick the output format: WAV, WAV 32-bit or MP3. For MP3, also choose the quality (128 to 320 kbps).
- If needed, change the sample rate (original/48000/44100/32000/22050/16000 Hz) and choose whether to mix down to mono.
- Want to cut it too? Drag across the waveform and press "Keep selection" first.
- Press Save to download the converted file.
Supported formats and limits
- Input: mp3 · wav · m4a · ogg · flac · aac · mp4 · webm and other formats your browser can open
- Output: WAV (16-bit) · WAV 32-bit float · MP3 (128/192/256/320 kbps)
- Sample rate: keep the original or change it to 48000/44100/32000/22050/16000 Hz
- Mono conversion is supported. For video files (mp4 etc.) only the sound is saved
- MP3 encoding runs in your browser with our own encoder, never through a server
Tips
- For everyday listening, MP3 at 192 kbps is plenty. For editing or archiving music, use WAV.
- For voice-only audio such as call recordings, 16000 to 22050 Hz sounds about the same and makes the file smaller.
- To pull audio out of a video, just add the mp4 file. Only the audio track is decoded.
- Lossy formats lose a little quality every time you re-encode them (mp3 to mp3, for example), so keep the original.
Troubleshooting
- Some unusual codecs (certain amr or wma files, for example) can't be decoded by browsers. Convert them to mp3 or wav with another program first.
- Large video files (hundreds of MB or more) can take a while. Don't close the page while it's working.
- If the saved MP3 won't play, the player may be the problem. Try another player or save as WAV to check.
FAQ
Can I convert M4A to MP3?
Yes. Add the file, choose MP3 as the output format and save.
Can I extract the audio from an MP4 video?
Yes. Add an mp4 or webm video and only the audio track is decoded, so you can save it as MP3 or WAV.
Will I lose quality?
This tool only handles audio, so video quality doesn't apply. WAV is lossless. MP3 is lossy, and the lower the bitrate, the lower the sound quality.
Can I convert several files at once?
This tool handles one file at a time.
Are my files stored on a server?
No. All conversion happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
