Online Voice Recorder (Free)
Press Start recording and speak. You'll see the input as a live waveform. When you stop, you can trim the silence and save.
- Recording a conversation you are not part of can be illegal, and many places require consent to record. When several people are present, tell them you are recording and get their consent first.
Loading the tool...
Record from your microphone right in the browser, with no app to install. Your recording stays on your device, and you can clean it up with other FreeSoundTools tools such as the noise remover.
When to use it
- Record a meeting or a lecture with your mic
- Quickly capture a voice memo or an idea
- Record singing or presentation practice and listen back
- Record your own voice (not a phone call) to keep
How to use
- Press "Start recording" and allow microphone access.
- Record while watching the waveform and the timer.
- Press "Stop recording" to see the result.
- Use "Play back" to check it, and turn "Trim silence at start/end" on or off as needed.
- Save as WAV or MP3.
Supported formats and limits
- Records from your microphone with echo cancellation and noise suppression turned on by default (the browser's echoCancellation and noiseSuppression features)
- Output: WAV (16-bit) or MP3 (160 kbps)
- Recordings are saved in mono (one channel)
- Very short recordings (under about 0.3 seconds) can't be saved
- With "Trim silence at start/end" on, quiet parts at the start and end are cut automatically when you save
Tips
- Record in a quiet place and keep the same distance between the mic and your mouth for a clearer sound.
- For long recordings such as meetings or lectures, check your battery and storage first so it doesn't get cut off.
- If noise got in, upload the saved file to the Voice Noise Remover to clean it up.
Troubleshooting
- If you blocked the microphone, click the lock icon next to the address bar, set the microphone back to Allow, and refresh.
- If nothing happens when you press record, check whether another tab or program is already using the microphone.
- If you see a message that the recording is too short, record for at least 0.3 seconds.
- Browsers only allow microphone access on HTTPS (or localhost). FreeSoundTools is served over HTTPS, so it works as usual.
FAQ
Are my recordings stored on a server?
No. Recording happens only in this device's memory and is never sent to a server.
Is there a time limit?
There is no set limit, but longer recordings use more memory, so for very long sessions we recommend stopping and saving now and then.
Can I turn my recording directly into text?
Yes. After saving, press the “Transcribe it” button to go to the speech-to-text tool and upload the saved file there.
There's a lot of noise in my recording. What can I do?
Upload the saved file to the noise remover to reduce the noise, then use it again.
Can I record in stereo?
This tool records a single microphone input in mono. For stereo, use a dedicated recording app or external gear.
Can I pause while recording?
For now there's only start and stop. If you need a pause, stop and start a new recording.
