Before you start
- Only upload files you have the right to use. Copying or sharing other people's music, videos or recordings without permission can violate copyright law. FreeSoundTools does not store your files on a server.
A clean start and a smooth ending make any clip sound finished. This tool finds the silence at both ends, adds fades you can see on the waveform and can bring the peak up to -1 dB.
When to use it
- Remove dead air at the start and end of a recording
- Fade out a song clip or ringtone smoothly
- Prepare intro and outro clips for videos
- Raise the level of a quiet recording
How to use
- Add an audio or video file.
- Adjust the silence threshold (dBFS). Detected silence is shown in red.
- Set fade in and fade out lengths in seconds. Fades are shown in orange.
- Tick normalize if you want the peak set to -1 dB.
- Preview, then save as MP3 or WAV.
Supported formats and limits
- Input: mp3 · wav · m4a · ogg · flac · aac · mp4 · webm and more
- Output: WAV (lossless) or MP3
- Silence threshold in dBFS, fades in seconds
- Normalize sets the highest peak to -1 dBFS
Tips
- If nothing is detected, raise the threshold (move it right). If too much is cut, lower it.
- For loudness standards like -14 LUFS, use the Volume or Loudness tools instead of peak normalize.
FAQ
How is silence detected?
Samples quieter than the threshold you set (in dBFS) at the very start and end count as silence and are trimmed.
Can I only fade without trimming?
Yes. Untick the trim option and set only the fade lengths.
What does normalize do?
It scales the whole file so the loudest peak reaches -1 dB, which makes quiet recordings louder without clipping.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
