Just like adjusting the key on a karaoke machine, you can transpose an audio file up or down by semitones. If a song is too high for your vocal range, lower it 2-3 semitones; if you need a higher key for instrument practice, raise it. The Speed & Pitch tool lets you do this right in your browser with no install.
How to change the key
- Open the Speed & Pitch page.
- Drop an MP3, WAV, or M4A file.
- Move the Pitch slider to shift by semitones. Negative (−) lowers the key; positive (+) raises it.
- If you only want to change the key, leave the Speed slider at 1.0×.
- Click Preview to listen to the result.
- Save as MP3 or WAV.
What does changing the key actually do?
Pitch shifting changes the pitch of an audio file while keeping the playback speed the same. In the cassette-tape era, slowing down a recording lowered the pitch; digital pitch shifting separates speed and pitch so you can adjust them independently.
- −1 to −3 semitones: Bring a high song into a more comfortable range.
- +1 to +3 semitones: Raise a low song to match your vocal range.
- ±4 semitones or more: Quality may change noticeably — vocals can start to sound robotic. Always preview first.
Use cases
- Vocal practice: Match a song to your comfortable range.
- Instrument practice: Transpose a backing track to the key your ensemble is playing in.
- Karaoke tracks: Use Vocal Remover to create an instrumental, then change the key.
- Video BGM: Shift background music to a brighter or darker mood.
Good to know
- The Speed & Pitch tool runs entirely in your browser and never sends files to a server.
- Transposing copyrighted music and redistributing it may violate copyright law. Use it for personal practice only.
- If you also want to change the tempo, adjust the Speed slider at the same time. See the Slow Down Music for Practice guide for more.
FAQ
Does changing the key also change the speed?
No. The Speed & Pitch tool uses a pitch-shift algorithm that keeps the tempo the same while raising or lowering the pitch.
How many semitones can I shift?
Up to ±12 semitones (one octave). Shifting more than 3-4 semitones may noticeably affect audio quality.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
Is this the same as changing the key on a karaoke machine?
Yes, the principle is the same. Both use pitch-shifting technology to transpose by semitones.
