When to use it
- Test whether speakers or headphones reproduce lows and highs
- Hear a reference pitch such as A4 = 440 Hz
- Compare a mains hum with 50 Hz and 60 Hz tones
- Sweep through frequencies to find room or speaker resonances
How to use
- Set the frequency with the slider or type an exact value in Hz. Common values are one tap away.
- Choose a waveform and keep the volume low.
- Press Play. You can move the slider while it plays.
- For a sweep, enter start and end frequencies and a duration, then press Start sweep.
- Press Stop at any time.
Formats and limits
- Waveforms: sine, square, sawtooth, triangle
- Range: 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz
- Sound starts only when you press a button, and the default volume is low.
- What you hear depends on your speakers or headphones; cheap speakers may not play lows near 20 Hz or highs above 15 kHz.
Protect your hearing
Always start quiet and raise the volume slowly, especially with headphones. Long exposure to loud sound or high frequencies can strain your hearing. Stop right away if it feels uncomfortable.
FAQ
Which waveforms can I make?
Sine, square, sawtooth and triangle, anywhere from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Use the slider for rough changes or type an exact Hz value.
Will the sound suddenly get loud?
The default volume is low and the tone fades in when it starts. With headphones, still start quiet and turn it up slowly.
Why can’t I hear very high or low tones?
Many speakers can’t reproduce frequencies near 20 Hz or above 15 kHz, and hearing at high frequencies declines with age. Try headphones.
Is this a hearing test?
No. It is a simple tone generator, not a medical or hearing-aid test tool.
